Have Your Say on New Street Names
Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council is inviting residents to suggest names for new streets within future developments across the borough.
Published: 15 January 2026
Street names play an important role in reflecting local identity and history, but they must also be clear, distinctive, and safe. To help with this, all suggested names must follow the guidelines below.
Important Rule on Duplicate Names
To avoid confusion, particularly for emergency services, street names must not be repeated or sound similar to existing street names within Welwyn Hatfield Borough or within a 10-kilometre radius.
Changing only the street ending (for example, Close instead of Road) will not be accepted as a sufficient difference. For example:
- St Marys Close would not be accepted if St Marys Way already exists nearby
- Names such as Bush Hill Lane and Bushell Lane would also not be permitted
What Makes a Suitable Street Name?
When submitting a suggestion, please ensure that:
- The name is easy to spell and pronounce
- No more than two words are used (excluding the street ending)
- The name is respectful and appropriate. Names that could be considered offensive, discriminatory, or contrary to the Council’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Strategy will not be accepted, including names that could easily be altered through abbreviation or graffiti
Approved Street Endings
All street names must end with an approved suffix that reflects the nature of the street, such as:
Road, Street, Close, Lane, Avenue, Mead, Meadow, Mews, Place, Park, Rise, Square, Terrace, View, or Drive.
Pedestrian routes must end with Path, Walk, or Way.
Looking to Local History and Geography
Residents are encouraged to draw inspiration from:
- Local history and heritage
- Geographical features or former land use
- Existing naming themes within the area
Street names must not be used for advertising or commercial gain, and marketing or sales names used by developers will not be adopted.
Naming Streets After Individuals
Streets are not normally named after living or recently deceased individuals. Exceptions may be considered where someone has made an exceptional contribution to the borough.
Where a deceased individual is proposed, national guidance requires that they have been deceased for at least 20 years, had a strong local connection, and that reasonable efforts have been made to obtain family consent.
Supporting Your Suggestion
You may include a short supporting statement explaining the relevance and meaning of your proposed street name.
Where to send your ideas
Please send your suggestions to the Parish Council Clerk, Lisa Peters, clerk@northawcuffley-pc.gov.uk who will be collating these suggestions on behalf of the Parish Council.
